set design for broadcast

As construction coordinator on "Hell’s Kitchen", Shane Middleton, president of Creativision LA, led and supervised a diversified crew of talented individuals to produce such a realistic set that even in HD, viewers all over the country believe is an actual restaurant and separate contestant living quarters. In reality, all components of the show from the huge kitchen area to the 2-storied restaurant space including spiral staircase, massive chandelier, bar with unique fish tank to Chef Ramsay’s office, outdoor patio and hot tub, as well as all living quarters were created on a sound stage. Through every step of the planning and install, Shane kept his team ahead of schedule, on budget and maintained the same standard of excellence and quality that Creativision LA has made their signature mark.

Our mission: design and build a neutral, modern and beautiful set constructed of 5 foot X 16 foot tall panels that can easily be taken apart and reconfigured to create new, fresh looks for different production needs.

How we accomplished the mission: We assisted this client in making their dreams of running a studio facility become a reality in less than one month. This went from a completely raw space (as you can see below) to a fully designed and built, easily adaptable, repaintable, reskinable set, as well as a castered cyc wall that meets their specific shooting needs. In addition, the Creativision LA team assisted in several other aspects of the build out; from sourcing sound proofing materials, to assisting in the decoration of the makeup/wardrobe/star and green rooms.

If we are talking about High Definition, then we know that every single detail counts; there is no room for error because the camera reads absolutely everything.

This is why Creativision LA was selected to design and build the Exercise TV "Star Trainers" set.  Once our client told us that that their vision was to reflect the Propel Fitness Water brand (which was among the major product sponsors), we knew exactly what they were looking for: clean, crisp, modern. They wanted to display large photos of the trainers, which we recommended be black and white to pose a stark contrast to the bright, glowing set and create a gallery-esque feeling.

Creativision LA selected every detail down to the vinyl logo that we applied to the flooring. We built large steel frames and wrapped them in a high-end lighting/projection fabric that was lit from behind with color gels. In addition, we selected the white mar light flooring for a unique, glossy and almost icy appearance. The producer of the shoot, the president of Exercise TV, the marketing director for Propel and also the marketing director for New Balance (another product sponsor) were thrilled with the end results and of course, so were we.

Now airing on the Discovery Channel’s Fit TV every morning, this set was designed to feel like an upscale work out facility located in the heart of a big city. The translight was chosen to emphasize the loft height that the client was after. In addition to the set construction, design and dressing, the "All Star Logo" itself was designed in Photoshop by Creativision LA and selected by the Discovery network for use on the entire series as well as all promotions for the series.
